New York, NY - A peaceful protest on Sesame Street took a violent turn yesterday when NYPD officers began aggressively corralling protesters in an attempt to break up the mixed crowd of humans and puppets.
The gathering on Sesame Street is just one of many protests against police brutality and racism that has occurred in the city in the past month, many of which have had similar outcomes as the NYPD have resorted to violent tactics to disperse crowds of protesters.
In addition to sound cannons and pepper spray, multiple witnesses at the protest yesterday confirmed that NYPD officers used hedge clippers to cut the strings off residents that refused instructions to go inside. Over ten protesters required stitches.
“I lost an eye during the chaos,” one protester told the NY Prophet. “I got it sewed it back on, but it’ll never be the same.”
Reports of a protester by the name of “Garzo” attempting to incite violence against NYPD officers were dismissed by the protest’s organizers as police propaganda.
“Garzo was an undercover cop,” said Abby Cadabby, one of the organizers. “He had a red armband around his tail.”
Big Bird, a resident of Sesame Street since 1969, told the NY Prophet it was an extremely disturbing experience.
“I haven’t been this upset since Mr. Hooper died,” Big Bird told the NY Prophet. “Why are the police acting this way? They’re supposed to protect us.”
It is estimated at least 50 people were arrested, including Elmo, a well-known Sesame Street resident with the emotional intelligence of a 4-year-old.
“First they maced him, then when he was on the ground crying, four officers jumped on him and dragged him away.” An anonymous witness told the NY Prophet. “I saw the whole thing from the trash can I live in.”
Elmo was released without charges several hours later reportedly when police officers discovered he was no longer puppeteered by a Black man.
