Weinstein Found Guilty Despite Evidence He is Rich and Powerful
Film producer shocked his wealth and intimidating reputation didn’t stop a guilty verdict.
New York, NY: Harvey Weinstein was today found guilty of sexual assault and rape in a landmark case that may pave the way for additional convictions against the disgraced film producer.
Remanded into custody until his sentencing on March 11, Weinstein was reportedly shocked that his reputation as a rich and powerful bully seemed to do little to insulate him against justice.
Best known as the executive producer of Spy Kids 3D: Game-Over (2003), Weinstein was exposed as a serial sexual predator in late 2017 when multiple women came forward with allegations of sexual harassment and assault, sparking the beginning of the #MeToo Movement.
“I really thought we had this one in the bag,” Weinstein’s attorney Donna Rotunno told the press following the conclusion of the trial. “I guess none of the jurors saw Spy Kids 3.”
Following the verdict, a spokesperson for convicted rapist Bill Cosby also released a statement lamenting the result.
“This is a sad day for rapists everywhere,” said spokesman Andrew Wyatt via Cosby’s Instagram account. “Celebrity rapists in particular are used to having special privileges they could rely on.”
Weinstein faces 5 to 25 years in New York State Prison, pending an appeal of the result.
“We will absolutely be appealing,” Rotunno told reporters on the courthouse steps, admitting it would be incredibly challenging to reverse the result.
“Appellate court judges are much harder to intimidate.”
